Which is the strongest jewelry / precious metal? Yellow Gold, White Gold or Silver? How many tons they can take? We are going to test that out with our 150 ton hydraulic press and 150 ton force sensor. And how they rank against metals like Tungsten / wolfram, Magnesium, Bishmuth, Aluminium or Iron?     @Carlyn Findlay that’s not HPC working in the shop with the gold. That’s a member of the company that cast and provided the gold for the pressing. And since the footage was likely shot by HPC (or someone else), the person clearly wasn’t alone in the shop.

    You can compare your results to published data for strength of materials in compression. For instance I found a reference that says the compressive strength of gold varies from 20MPa to 205MPa. 1 MPa is 1 million kg, multiplied by 9.8, divided by the area of compression. For a 10mm cube the data suggests the applied force at ultimate compressive stress should be 2000 to 20,000N, or 204kg to 2004kg, or .2 to 2 metric tons, or 449 to 4490lb. You can get this number for any material, just multiply the strength by the area, that gives you force.

    If you stop pressing, heat it to red, cool it, and continue pressing, you can crush it without cracks. There should be no limit to the pressure it can hold, as the surface will increase indefinitely.

    As a Goldsmith, I can say this is pretty meaningless. Without the exact metal compositions, you can’t get anything from this other than a bit of interesting entertainment. For example, there are obviously different gold purities and compositions such as that “yellow gold” which appeared to be very low grade.

    I wear a tungsten carbide wedding ring. It's the only one that can stand up to the wear and tear of a technician working in the oil industry. We work with hard alloys all the time like P550 or Inconel. The hard-facing put on top of those is crazy hard, and my hands come into contact with it all the time.

    18 carat gold is very soft, that's way harder than pure 18 carat gold, the most malleable metal that I know of. If it had been pure it wouldn't have taken anywhere near that much pressure to squash it. That is what I was expecting, not some alloy that's partly gold, just pure gold otherwise it's meaningless.

    I have an idea. Could you fabricate a small device that uses a lever to increase the pressing force put Into itself? Like a tube inside the structure with a press cylinder inside it and a lever attached to it. Then put the contraption into the big press where you press the lever sticking out the device. Perhaps the lever can multiply the pressing force? I’m trying to think of a way to make a special type of ice. It’s actually possible to compress ice enough so that it is actually denser than water. Which is odd because water typically expands when frozen
